Can Insufficient Rest Increase Your Appetite?

Recent research by the National Center for Biotechnology Information reveals that a lack of sleep does more than just make you groggy and irritable. It can mess with the hormones that control your appetite, leading to an increased desire to eat more calories, which can eventually cause weight gain and even obesity.

Ever notice how after a bad night’s sleep, you’re more tempted to go for high-calorie snacks like chips instead of making a healthy meal? That’s your lack of sleep at work, making you crave those salty treats.

The feeling of being full and the urge to eat are controlled by two hormones: leptin and ghrelin. Leptin, which is secreted by fat cells, signals to your brain that you have enough energy stored and don’t need to eat more. On the other hand, ghrelin, which is released by the digestive system when your energy levels are low, tells your brain that you’re hungry.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your leptin levels drop and ghrelin levels increase, making you feel hungrier and crave high-calorie foods. A recent study by the University of California, Berkeley, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), showed that sleep-deprived people have a stronger desire to eat junk food.

The study had participants look at photos of various foods, both healthy (like fruits and vegetables) and unhealthy (such as doughnuts and pizza) after having a full eight hours of sleep and after getting much less sleep. The results showed that when sleep-deprived individuals viewed photos of unhealthy foods, their brain’s frontal lobe (which helps make rational decisions) had decreased activity. Conversely, the amygdala (which controls reward-seeking behaviors like the desire to eat unhealthy foods) showed increased activity. This explains why people who don’t sleep enough tend to choose junk food over healthier options.

To improve both the amount and quality of your sleep, consider adopting better sleep habits. Doing so can significantly boost your energy levels, mood, and even help you manage your weight better.
