Staying Fit Without Paying for a Gym Membership
With gyms being closed for quite a while, many of us found ourselves joking about how often we visited our fridges while working from home. But in all seriousness, taking care of our health and fitness should remain a top priority. Without good health, even basic tasks and hitting goals in different areas of life can become tougher.
Now that gyms are starting to reopen, it’s important to remember that you don’t necessarily need a gym membership to stay fit. My gym plan has been paused for some time, and I’ve been trying out other ways to stay active. Here are some ideas to keep fit without a gym.
SET UP A SOLID WORKOUT SCHEDULE
Just like I organize my work and other activities, I set up a regular workout schedule. I usually exercise in the mornings or during my lunch break, and sometimes in the evenings with my husband.
Without a gym membership, you have the freedom to plan your workouts based on your needs. If you’re someone who likes structured group fitness classes, create your own routine and jot it down on your calendar. Sticking to it is the key.
Writing down my daily workout goals helps mentally commit me to them. On days when I’m not feeling motivated, just committing to 20 minutes of exercise can really help. Often, just starting the workout makes all the difference.
USE FREE WORKOUT VIDEOS AND APPS
When I want to build muscle and tone up, I often use free workout videos on YouTube. There are tons of free resources and tips on there that I love.
I also use the Nike+ Training Club app, which is free and offers personalized training sessions you can do anytime and anywhere. The app features different programs led by Nike Master Trainers and athletes, letting you shape a weekly plan that fits your schedule and goals.
GET BASIC FITNESS GEAR
One downside of not going to the gym is missing out on their equipment variety. However, I make do with simple gear I have, like a resistance band, a medicine ball, and a speed rope for some quick cardio.
TRY OUT RUNNING
Running is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to stay in shape, though it’s never been my favorite. I’ve been considering dancing or Zumba instead to meet my cardio needs. Having the right shoes can also make running more enjoyable and comfortable, especially for beginners.
STAY ACTIVE
The easiest way to keep fit without a gym membership is by simply staying active. I track my activity with a Fitbit, but there are pedometer apps for your phone that work too. I aim for at least 10,000 steps daily and often try to push myself even further. You can always take walks, play outdoor sports, or go for bike rides—as long as you’re moving and stretching.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to stay fit without needing a gym membership. Whether you choose the gym or exercise at home, it all comes down to personal preference.
