Online Spending Momentum Remains Strong

ComScore shared on Sunday that early December turned out to be surprisingly strong for online shopping in the U.S., which usually sees a dip during this time. In the first week, consumers spent about $5.9 billion online, marking a 15% increase from last year. Events like Cyber Monday and Black Friday played a big role, with Cyber Monday hitting a record $1.2 billion in sales.

Initially, there were concerns that high early sales might slow down in early December, but those worries were unfounded. Instead, the latest numbers suggest that the holiday shopping period could finish on a high note.

The upcoming week is usually the busiest for online retailers. For instance, eBay came up with the term Green Monday in 2007 to describe the Monday of the second week in December, known for being one of the most active online shopping days. For six years in a row, Green Monday has ranked among the top spending days of the holiday season.
