Budget-Friendly Getaways in Southern California for Your Weekend
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner and coinciding with the long President’s Day weekend, I started thinking about affordable weekend getaways in Southern California. Eric and I love these budget-friendly trips. Right now, we’re enjoying the DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) phase of our lives and often take off on spontaneous weekend adventures, leaving our beloved pet with our parents.
Our goal is to squeeze out as much fun as possible from these budget-friendly trips, giving us a mini-vacation vibe, even if we have to return to work on Monday. Here are some cheap getaway ideas in Southern California:
**San Diego**
San Diego has so much to offer—lively nightlife, fancy dining, relaxing spas, and a chilled-out beach vibe. Spend a day exploring Old Town State Park, considered the birthplace of California. The local Mexican eateries are a hit, known for huge margaritas and fresh tortillas. For a memorable evening, head to the Gaslamp District with its array of restaurants and bars. A day trip to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, or USS Midway Museum is definitely worth it.
**Temecula**
A weekend of wine tasting in Temecula feels as refreshing as a week-long getaway. It’s like a more approachable Napa Valley with a friendly vibe. Wine tasting here is relaxed, ideal for both newcomers and aficionados. After a day of sampling wines, you might retreat early, but if you’re up for it, check out the nightlife in Old Town Temecula, take a hot air balloon ride, or enjoy a spa day at South Coast Winery.
**Los Angeles**
Although LA’s traffic and smog might not be appealing, being a tourist for a weekend can be thrilling. Spend a day exploring Hollywood and Highland, go on a celebrity home tour, watch a TV show recording, and maybe have a drink at a star-studded spot like The Standard or the Roosevelt Hotel.
**Las Vegas**
For those in Southern California, Vegas is already a familiar rush of excitement. To beat the crowd, think about leaving work a bit early on Friday.
**Big Bear**
Leave behind the city’s chaos and embrace the peace of Big Bear. Be it skiing in winter or hiking in summer, the mountains offer a warm welcome year-round.
**Catalina Island**
For the best deals, look for packages that bundle transportation and lodging. This charming island offers a taste of Southern California’s own version of Martha’s Vineyard.
**Santa Ynez Valley**
If you’ve already visited Temecula, head to the Santa Ynez Valley. It boasts numerous wineries in Los Olivos and Solvang, providing an extension of the Santa Barbara wine experience.
**Santa Barbara**
Santa Barbara is an idyllic spot, perfect for a serene escape. With a rich history and a vibrant downtown, it promises a delightful getaway.
