Trying to relax and recharge while squeezing in exercise can be tough. I just got back from a short trip and struggled to keep up with my workouts and diet.
I tried going for a morning run on the beach—didn’t happen. An afternoon workout between sightseeing—didn’t happen either. It can be really challenging to carve out time for exercise, but there are easier ways to get your blood pumping without sticking to rigid routines like morning runs or gym sessions.
Don’t expect to run three miles every day on vacation. Aim to have fun and fit in some exercise when you can, without being hard on yourself if you miss a day. For instance, we walked a two-mile round trip on the boardwalk, saw some cool boats, enjoyed the bay, and got a fresh perspective of the area.
If you know where you’re going, plan ahead and bring your snorkeling or running gear. Being prepared can make it easier to stay active.
One of the simplest ways to get exercise is with a buddy. It’s more fun and motivational to have someone with you, and you’ll end up burning more calories too.
If the fitness room is out of reach, no worries! Try exercising in the pool, swimming or snorkeling in the ocean, biking through the countryside, or hiking up hills. If you’re a morning person, get in a quick workout early so you can enjoy the rest of your day. Maybe a fast HIIT session?
While this isn’t a workout tip, staying hydrated is crucial. There’s nothing worse than being on a road trip without enough water or staying in a hotel with lousy tap water. Dehydration can tire you out, so bring plenty of water to stay energized.
If you can’t manage all your planned vacation workouts, it’s fine. Use this time to recharge both mentally and physically, and return eager to hit the gym or work with renewed enthusiasm.
Enjoy your vacation—you’ve earned it! Keep these tips in mind for your next trip or even when you’re on the go.
